With pretty good odds, I can tell you that there is a good chance that you have:
- A health goal
- A wealth goal
- A relationships goal
True, or true?
This is a clue. In order to be successful, we must make sure that we are well rounded.
How do we do that?
With all the hustle and bustle of life, how do we sit down and make things happen?
It starts with making sure that you are managing your life effectively.
Ask yourself these questions about your goals/outcomes:
1) How well have -you- been tracking with your goals?
2) Do you use a goal-setting or life management system?
2a) Is it effective?
3) What have you done recently that takes you in the direction of your goals?
4) How do you know that you will get your goal?
5) How will you feel when you’ve got it?
And so on. The importance is that you keep track of where you are on your goals, and you keep moving towards them and you know in what ways you’re moving towards them. If you don’t know all of this off the top of your head, you need to spend more time planning out your goals.
One of the first things that Oscar and I do in our coaching program that we are doing (phone coaching nationwide, and in-person coaching in the DC area), is that we draw out your optimal outcomes. We adjust them to make sure they fit right, and then we put them back in person using a process known as Background Belief Installation.
If you’re interested in our coaching program, send me a message.
What feedback do you have on your goals? What questions do you have, and what processes have you come up with, to enable you to achieve them faster?
Personal Development is the act of starting from where you are, zeroing the playing field to the best of your ability, mapping out the landscape, and starting out on a powerful vector and slowly process designing and getting the life that you want.
Primary experiences are experiences that are related to the external world, or the territory.
The prefix “meta-” means “above” or “about.” It is a state about something that happens inside of your head, as opposed to a primary state which must be anchored to the external world. A quick example of this is that if a person is seeing themselves in an image inside of their head as if it were on a movie screen, they are meta to the screen. They’re not actually inside of it. Only when they view it as if it were really happening and with them inside of their body, do they start to experience the primary states.
Note that meta does not mean dissociation, but dissociation is very very important. Skillful hypnotists all use dissociation on some level.
People dissociate from their consciousness. It is a wonder to me that most people do not understand just how powerful the ideas of “conscious” and “unconscious” are. “Your unconscious now” is not just a command, but it presupposes that there is some part of you that is unconscious-ness. It focuses attention to the part of the mind that, by definition, they don’t have all of their conscious “stuff” there.
Playing with visual/auditory language in the context of it’s use as an ambiguity, is very fun.
I came up with this earlier, practicing my language patterns:
“and it’s at that point… where a bridge of reality is created.”
And of course when you say “point” you point at yourself , and then you draw a bridge from you to them. (Read: these are playing with VISUAL submodalities)
“I want to line some things up in your mind.”
A highway… a desert path … lost in an amazon rainforest, loses track of time, nutrients makeup changes so body chemistry is altered, you hear a voice that draws you in to feel more confident.
So, now that you all understand better, I want to see some field reports.
Are you a hypnotist only in the room where you do hypnosis, or can you find yourself able to be a hypnotist in all of your life. Now the real kicker of this is: You get what you put into it.
You want to be good at hypnosis? You put in at least an hour, but ideally 2-4 hours, every day. You can find a way to get another hour into your day, trust me. Doesn’t matter how busy you are. Long term goals outshadow momentary urgency.
This means to practice your language every day. One of the reasons that we taught the Language Patterns Course was that we wanted to give people a structure by which they can learn hypnosis quickly, because one of the things we offered in that course was a plan of action for how to become an incredible hypnotist.
For example:
- Practice pacing someone’s rep system predicates.
- Whenever you listen to a conversation, notice how you can pick out certain key words that they lean on. Your job is to then repeat it back to them, and since it is their own words, it is irresistible.
- Practice using a specific word, like the word because.
- Become a master of that word. Then go learn other influential phrases. Before you know it, you will have built up a solid library of techniques and foundations, and other people will come up to you wondering how they can be you.
We are having lots of fun in the forums. I’m gonna start posting a few articles of the best stuff from the forums, just so you all know what you’re missing.TrancedOUT Forums
Time Boxing by pokerwithoutcards
Time boxing is the act of sectioning off a particular amount of time for an activity.
One way it can be used is to stop procrastination and move into action.
In other words if you tell yourself, “I am only going to spend 30 minutes on this project,” you might spend more than 30, but the promise that you have permission from yourself to quit after that time is very reassuring. It gets you to take action.
The other way it can be used is to control how your working. I forgot what the “law” is called, but essentially there’s a doctrine that states that a task inflates itself to the amount of time allocated to it.
That means if you act as if you have unlimited time for a particular task, you will spend a long time on details that perhaps does not impact the final result that much if at all.
If, instead, you allocate a certain amount of time, you will do ONLY those things that are necessary to move it into completion.
Example:
“I want to clean up my house”
Problems: Too big chunk, unspecified, looks/sounds/feels like a big task.
Solutions:
a) Chunk down. “I will clean off this desk, that desk, and this other thing.”
GET SPECIFIC. Get as specific as you need to be. If it appears overwhelming, keep chunking down and do a few steps at a time.
You can solve any goal by simply taking it a few steps at a time. The biggest challenge in anything that you have to do is to GET STARTED and take action. Make a plan, and then LAUNCH immediately.
b) Time box. “I will spend only an hour today cleaning up the kitchen. If I get the kitchen clean before then, I get to stop. If I’m still working in the kitchen after an hour has passed, I get to stop.”
By setting up rules for how you will do it, you actually DO something towards the task, and you relieve yourself from any guilt.
Use these things in your life, and you will be successful.
Taking Actionby Exiled
Hey Everyone,
When most people think of personal development we think about self help tapes, Tony Robbins, motivational speakers and so on. The reason is most of those things mentioned all have something to do with the field of personal development.
We spend thousands of dollars and invest our time into changing our lives for the better. We got to these events and reads the books learning new techniques, new ways of thinking and taking notice of how we are feeling.
The Personal Development field is one of the biggest money makers in the world. Millions of tapes, books and speakers are providing their message. The truth is most of these people are successful and have followed certain blueprints that lead to them being successful.
Other times the person is only successful because he is a really good con artist, but hey the con artist was smart enough to think of the idea in the first place.
Okay, back to the meat of this post.
We go to these events and we get pumped up and ready for massive change. In other cases, we ready the books and listen to the tapes and reflect upon our lives while listening. Once we finish we know things are going to be different. We know our lives can never be the same.
Then when we fast forward a few months into the future these same people are in the same place they were before or worst. Why? Why spend the amount of time, energy and money for these products yet some people never even finish the tape set. Why?
Why would people spend so much money and time and then not change anything about their lives. These people have received great information, but how come most people never become successful or become rich?
Is it because this information doesn’t work or is it because you got ripped off. One could say these things but I tend to think thats not the problem at all. Remember, knowledge and information isn’t power. Someone once said Knowledge and information is nothing more then unorganized information.
For some reason people tend to think all you have to do is gain some new information and success is bound. Well thinking positive may be better than thinking negative, but if you just sit on your butt and hope you may never see success.
So what is the difference between those who make the information work and those who don’t. Its really quite simple and its how I’ve done pretty well for myself. Its nothing more than two simple words, which are “Taking Action”.
I know some of you are like I already know that, well if you do how come your not where you want to be. Gaining information is just the first step, the second step is to act upon this information and take action. You must take action every single day to reach your goals.
Some people tend to think you must make massive amounts of action and that’s not the case. Just a little step each day in the right direction and you will get there. Some people tend to take action for a few days and then stop when life starts to get hard.
The real winners are the ones who take small steps in the right direction with each step getting you closure and closure. Some people who want to get in better shape try to make it a habit to get on the treadmill everyday for 30 min when they never stepped on one in their life.
So instead of doing 30 min every day why not just get on for 5 to 10 min and get your body and mind used to the idea.
In realitiy, nothing can get done without taking action. It all starts with a idea, but without action a idea is nothing more then just a idea. So gather information, know what you want and just take action.
Now this doesn’t mean everything will be perfect in your life, but how can you get down the road if you don’t leave the house. Personally it is the people who move toward what they want and take action that seem to be the ones who can say this self improvement tape worked for me or Tony Robbins changed my life.
We can’t blame them for supplying the information and then when it doesn’t work blame them because we didn’t take action. So once again TAKE ACTION and move toward change. Once again this is just my opinion and we all know there are many ways that lead to the same road.
REPLY by pokerwithoutcards:
It took me probably 20 times hearing my good friends say this to me before I got it. They kept saying, “Take action, bro, you need to stop thinking and do things.”
And now I understand the value of it. Most people only contemplate and they do a bunch of future predicting about how it’s going to turn out.
Felix Dennis says in his book “How to Get Rich” (he is a multi-millionaire) that ideas hardly even matter if the follow-through is good. In other words you could have a shitty idea with great follow-through and make it work, but..
EVEN THE BEST IDEA IN THE WORLD WILL NOT WORK IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW THROUGH ON IT.
Oscar and I had an idea for a coaching program. Are we at the “ideal” place in our business? Of course not - we always want to be bigger and better.
Are we MUCH farther ahead and better off for taking action and LAUNCHING? Yes. And we’ve had a TON of fun in the process and we’ve met a lot of great people.
If you read, listen to, or watch enough self improvement stuff, you will hear this point over and over again. You MUST take action and -do- something.
Yes, it won’t be perfect at first. It’s just bound to happen.
Now I can stand up in front of a room and, with true authority tell people what works and what doesn’t. Theory-based knowledge is great for mental stimulation, but useless in the real world.
This video, about reaction at a Tony Robbins event about the terrorist attacks on 9/11, I’m sure, has made it around the internet because it’s pretty old. And I’ve actually seen this seminar tape and was really struck by it, but today I came across a clip of it, and I wanted to share it here.
As a person who leads events, I wonder what it would be like to navigate through a landscape like that. Tony did an incredible job at utilizing the situation, something that obviously came from a lot of experience being on stage and being able to think on his feet.
What would you have done in Tony’s situation, here?
As you answer that question, remember that the map is not the territory. The muslim man is not “wrong” for his beliefs and I applaud him for being able to say that freely. Dogmatism just isn’t enough fun. How do we reconcile the opinions?
“Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive.
So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive”
- Survivor, “Eye of the Tiger”
We must purposefully create discomfort with our current situation, in order to grow beyond our limits.
I am constantly pushing myself to do things, as Kanye West says, BETTER, FASTER, HARDER, STRONGER.
You must do this as well. For the second you take things for granted is the second that you are slipping, moving back into being a somnambulist to the mass media and popular culture and to your excuses for not achieving the success you deserve.
Here is my question for you:
What will we do, to maintain our level of PASSION, our FOCUS on our goals, and our INSATIABLE DESIRE to achieve them?
It is said that people who are young are the drivers of all that is good.
Felix Dennis, in his book “How to Get Rich,” calls the stamina of the young and their unjaded perspective as their most valuable assets. Experience? Capital? These are largely irrelevant for the young people today. We must have the desire and the will to achieve.
And if we are going to climb to the top of whatever ladder or mountain we choose to set our sights on, our focus and intensity must be at a thousand percent.
We have been having a blast on the forums. One of our users, Oleg, recently started a blog called HypNLP. Go check it out. Come party with us on the forums. We post all of the really good stuff there.
To those of you that read this with an RSS feed, I know you probably think I’m slacking. The truth is I’ve been doing more than I ever have.
Along with a good friend of mine, we have started a coaching company that uses hypnosis and NLP skills to get people to where they want to be. We guide them through the process every step of the way and ensure that they are getting maximum results.
Every live session with us includes a dual induction, which is where I am in your left ear and my friend is in your right ear, and we get you so far into trance that all you remember is that your life seems to be improving more rapidly than you can imagine.
Right now since we are in “trials,” we are working on getting the testimonials that will promote us forward. Look for them, they will be coming. The clients that we coach are experiencing incredible results and are seeing some very powerful changes manifest in their lives.
If you live in the DC area or can make it there and if you would like to be a part of our program, let me know on the forums, or send me an e-mail at pokerwithoutcardsyt at gmail dotcom.
I know you’d like me to just give it to you but I want some activity in there
My goal is to keep posting content there. I think I’m going to start posting more content there than on the actual site, because I think the forum needs to have more life to it and I want to draw people in.
I’ve worked with many people on eliminating the inner voices they have. In a recent talk that we did, we had 20 people sheepishly raise their hands as they admitted that they too sometimes didn’t say the nicest stuff to themselves.
What happens when you take that voice and move it to a different location? Really tune in to where it is and just move it. See how it works over there and what the change is. And is the voice a deep tone, or is it high pitched and scratchy?
Basically, map out all of the submodalities. Is it near or distant? Are you awake or are you starting to become drowsy? Take that sound and imagine that you are putting it in a sound-proof box, and before you close the lid make sure that you can live without it for a couple seconds. And close the lid and see what that feels like.
And maybe that voice is very powerful. Maybe it has you think about things. And if it is that powerful, why not put a different set of words for the voice. Change it to a happy tonality. And find out if you can turn this into a positive experience.
Now… forget all of that… and lets go for an adventure.
Imagine your eyes are closed and that your hearing can become more sensitive and you may remain conscious of your breath and remain unconscious of another part. And I want you to start out with some very loud bass drums with a steady beat, and feel them in your body. Notice what happens when you move the drums closer to you and this sounds good.
Now. Add in some sound effects from mother nature - an earthquake that your unconscious can step into the big screen to fully immerse yourself in this experience. And since you feel that powerfully you can begin to feel the adrenaline of being faced right in the wake of the tornado, and the deep-seated rumble from the belly of a giant thunder storm.
Hear the CRACK of the lightning and how it impacts you… and do you remember when you could figure out how far away it was by counting the seconds? Until your trance, feel that beginning and if you could see the sunshine and the sound of some birds.
Notice what that’s like … and this should be your every moment experience.
Take control of your voices, crank them up, and change them however you’d like. Hear what Yoda would sound like inside of your head. And then hear Goofy, giving yourself all that bad advice.
The basic process is to elicit your own submodalities (find a list of them and go through how your own voice relates to that), figure out if the voice is positive or negative and if you want it, throw it in a box or in someone’s pocket. And do all of this in a sufficiently deep state.
Since you have attained that b y now, you may have already started to make these changes.
From what I have seen, most people do personal development or self-improvement only when it’s convenient. They do it only when they’re “on the money” and then when they aren’t feeling like it, they slip back into their own habits.
“Adults seem to want to learn everything at once. This approach will not work.” - Milton H. Erickson
It is said that we all teach what we most need to learn, and for this one, I need to learn it too. It’s a continual lesson for me. My guess is it’s a lesson for all of you too - can you stick to your goals when you are tired, cold, hungry, and sick?
I think to myself, what would some elite military guy like a Navy SEAL do in this situation? They don’t know failure. They literally don’t consider stopping. They just keep going until they’re dead.
When I was doing martial arts hardcore, this is one of the lessons I learned - you don’t stop until it’s time to stop. Maybe you’re doing pushups and you can’t do another pushup - that’s fine but you need to keep working at that next one until you get it.
If you’re like most people, you don’t stop to think about why you are here and what you’re doing. You just go through your life, a mysterious combination of motivations and loyalties and drives and desires.
We’re all here on this planet (RIP Pluto) and we all have these things we want to achieve. What are your top 3 goals? For most people it’s a health goal, a wealth goal, and a relationships goal. In order to achieve these goals we have to do certain things and we have to do them consistently.
What stops us all from having our goals? Chiefly among them is our desire for consistency and comfort within ourselves; if we change then we might become inconsistent and we certainly will experience some (temporary) discomfort.
As a hypnotist I’m taught that the reason people don’t stick to their goals longterm is that they rely on “willpower” which is kind of like mental adrenaline - it gives you a burst in the moment but doesn’t last over time. To truly change our goals, I’m taught, we need to change the underlying subconscious programming that is there.
Is this accurate? I don’t know. It’s certainly just a model and all models have their limitations. I’m beginning to doubt it. Because this “habit change” process is a HUGE part of solving people’s problems. If we can get people to change a habit, then we are very much on the way to success.
Thoughts? I know I haven’t spelled out the answer to this one, but I’m still figuring it out myself. Maybe that’s the best place to be in the cycle
Here are some things I do to ensure I stick to my goals:
Think about your goals all of the time. Wake up and think about them. Think about them drinking your coffee. Think about them driving. Think about them everywhere and whenever you have a spare minute. This is your JOB, to dream up just how good you want it to be. Think about what you want.
Make lists. One of the things I fill out every night now is an excel spreadsheet that when printed out has a “capture” section for the different things I have to do, and there’s time blocks where I schedule it in. This is a very helpful practice.
Journaling. Start to use a journal on a daily basis. And have specific things that you journal about, make it structured. Most people journal like “Well I had a good day today and X Y and Z happened.” It’s better to journal in terms of your goals. Have a structure and stick to it. Ask yourself how well you’re doing on your goals, every day. Where in your time line to get your goal are you?
Routines. Get in a routine of doing personal development every day. It’s the most important part of your day. Personally I prefer very early in the morning (like 6am) but some people work also well at night. If you can do it at night and stick to it, then fine. Otherwise schedule it when you know you’ll follow through.
Map out your goal completely and continue to map it out as you go. Review the goal constantly and update it. This is easy for guys who for example have a weight training schedule, you’re always moving up in how much you can handle. It’s continuous. Do that with all of your goals.
Time trials. Steve Pavlina recommends doing 30-day trials in which you adopt a behavior pattern for only 30 days. This is a great approach that represents chunking down and time blocking.
Organize as much as you can. It’s possible that it’s just me, but I feel much more motivated when I know exactly where everything is and what is going to happen. Right now I have a stackable inbox on top of my printer with 4 different shelves; I have a filing cabinet and an expandable folder.I have laminated sheets with important stuff, I have a mind map (mindjet mindmanager) of everything I need to do (”next action items”) and I have a calendar on there of what I expect to have happen. That seems like a lot, but it’s actually just enough to keep everything working. I know where everything goes. That’s what you want to develop.
Clean off your desk constantly and consistently. I don’t know about you but my desk is clean for about 30 minutes. Develop the habit of continuing to clean it. Before you leave the office or go to bed, clean off your tables and desks. When you return you’ll be more inclined for productivity because you can work easier.
Put reminders of your goal everywhere. If you work at a computer, put a note on your computer monitor. If you have a bathroom, put your goals right where you can look at them when you have nothing else to do. Hold a copy of your goals with you at all times.
In summary, use what works for you. I’ve found that sticking to your goals requires some discipline and stiff upper lip, but it also requires flexibility.
The main thing to remember is to persist through your hurdles and keep going even when you think it’s not working and you are getting no external rewards. If you have been following my instructions so far and you follow my suggestions, you’ll find that your goals are getting met faster and with more clarity. I’ll put out a more detailed goal setting process at some point.
Part of becoming a great hypnotist is learning how to create tools for change.
In this example, we use an imaginary circle of possibility and power. The circle doesn’t have to really exist, because we can dream it up in our minds. We can add on any abilities we want it to have an craft it any way we want.
So the key is a great imagination.
The basic steps of this technique are to:
Imagine a circle on the floor. It can be like a hula hoop or it can be just a circle of energy.
Visualize a person who you want to emulate, or some great skillset, inside of the circle.
Step into the circle, and absorb the skills or the person that is within it. Take out or add in anything you want.
Step out of the circle, taking with you the skill or ability.
Now that you’ve got that framework, you might become curious to how you can modify it. The circle is flexible so you can make it an energy cylinder; it can be wavelike, or full of energizing particles. It could also be something like Wonka’s elevator, where you click a button and you get an effect.
All of these are just constructs but they help people to feel that they are in a different space - that means all of their normal filters that they place on things are not there. That’s how rapid learning takes place within hypnosis - we’re just getting rid of the interference.
I have a friend who is very interested in hypnosis but she doesn’t know where to begin. She says she doesn’t have enough information and nobody to practice on.What is the problem here? I seem to have almost too much information. I have many books that I haven’t read, and every time I go out is an opportunity to practice. As a result, I have become one of the best hypnotists in my area.
But most people don’t know how to get there. They have no idea where to start, and they aren’t aware of how to conquer their initial anxiety.
Here are some ideas:
Read as many hypnosis and NLP blogs and mailing lists as possible. This will keep you up to date. Did you know that Steve Andreas has a mailing list? Go find out who else’s mailing list you can get on. A lot of times these things are free and have incredible amounts of information in them.
Go buy books on hypnosis. “Trancework” by Yapko, “Uncommon Therapy” by Jay Haley, “My Voice Will Go With You” by Sidney Rosen., “Mind Lines” by Michael Hall and “Sleight of Mouth” by Robert Dilts. I’m just reciting these off the top of my head, if you don’t know these titles then you aren’t in the game.
Practice self-hypnosis. It is important that you learn what the hypnotic state feels like. Here is a secret: All good hypnotists go into trance when they are hypnotizing someone. Personally I go into a very focused, concentrated and powerful state.
Once you have a routine that you can go through to hypnotize someone like the Tranced Out Modified Elman Induction, go out and practice. Hypnotize your roommate’s girlfriend. She’ll love you for it, he’ll be pissed but will be nice to you because he thinks that’s what she wants. It’s a win/win.
Practice your language patterns EVERY DAY. Go get a couple decks of theSalad Ltd Hypnosis Cards. While you remember to remember what hasn’t happened with your awareness of your feet inside the shoe, you can forget to notice what could not have happened with the lint between your toes? And if you haven’t yet noticed or won’t become aware of yet the breathing pattern slowing, until I want you to, then you might not be aware of just how deep of a trance you’re developing, are you not?
Become a master of influence. Pretend it so real that it becomes true for you. Open your mind to being able to practice these things effectively.
Join practice groups like the Sleepwalkersorganization. See if there is already a practice group in your area, and if there isn’t, start one. Find friends in your area who are interested in topics like social dynamics or hypnosis or nlp. Women tend to be more interested in hypnosis than men, so befriend one of them and she will let you practice your skills.
Have fun.

One of the best tools to develop is the ability to take in a bigger chunk of data at once, and to be able to interpret this naturally. I wrote this a while ago, and I figured I’d share it with you.
There’s this thing in the brain called the corpus callosum — it’s what connects both sides of the brain. The thing is, in females, that massive information channel is about twice as big as it is in males. This is the part of the brain that all the data goes through, and it’s why a lot of guys tend to be very left-brained.
I trained myself to be able to access both sides of the brain, back when I didn’t even know I was doing it. Part of it was through becoming more aware of what was happening around me. I don’t know if you guys are aware of this, but what you are sensing right now is only a fraction of what you could be sensing. If you don’t believe me, go into a war zone. After a few days of being shot at, you’ll go into what’s called hyper acuity — which is what you do if you don’t want to die.
Another example is [tag]Milton Erickson[/tag], a very famous hypnotist who is dead now, had childhood polio. One of the side effects was that he was initially deaf — and he trained himself to figure out how a person’s voice sounded by looking at their throat.
A female’s voice tends to originate higher in the throat, whereas a male’s voice tends to originate lower. Some people speak out of their throat, so that vibrates, some people speak from the upper chest, some from the diaphragm, and some deeper down. This is actually surprisingly easy to see if you actually pay attention to how people breathe.
I talk to people about “energy”. To me this is a pretty straightforward concept, it’s something I can feel. Besides, if you know anything about how the universe works, the basic building block is energy. Somehow people have a hard time making the leap from the scientific understanding that they got with their left brain to being able to feel this energy, to project it, and to manipulate it.
So one way of increasing [tag]sensory acuity[/tag] is to notice the energy in your body. How does it flow? Where does it start, and then where, and where does it end up? Where are you breathing at right now? How would a person who is happy or totally certain of an outcome be breathing? How would they be standing?
Talking about senses, most people think of the 5 senses — or VAKOG. Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory. In [tag]NLP[/tag] these are called representational systems or modalities. The primary ones are visual, auditory and kinesthetic. So, when someone puts their eyes up, they are accessing visually. If they put their eyes to the side they are accessing auditorally, if they go down and to the left that’s where they are talking to themselves (also auditory), and down and to the right is kinesthetic.
If you want to increase your auditory acuity, grab two friends… have them sit pretty close together, close your eyes, and have them snap their fingers in the same location and you tell them which one did the finger snap. You should get between about 30-70% of them correctly to be learning the skill efficiently.
If you want to increase visual acuity, look down at the grass. Did you know that every blade of grass is a different shade of green? It’s true. If you don’t see it yet, look closer and see what distinctions you can make. These distinctions are called submodalities… There’s a fairly good list here (although I’ve seen much more complete ones): http://www.trans4mind.com/personal_development/mindMastery/submodalities.htm
If you want to increase kinesthetic acuity, pay attention to your body. Put your eyes down and to the right and scan your body — what muscles are the most tense? What muscles are the most relaxed? Can you feel the weight of your body sinking down into the chair? The air on your skin? The feel of the clothes on your body? The blood moving thru your left earlobe?
I could write 20 pages about this topic, but if you wanted to increase your sensory acuity you now have a good start.
To increase your sensory acuity is to increase the number of distinctions that you can make with your senses. It also increases the amount of data that you are able to consciously focus on. As you begin to pay attention to social dynamics, you’ll discover that your ability to read people and what is going on in the situation is dramatically increased. And at this point in the journey you can start to acquire social skills at a much deeper level.
How do you do it?
Paying attention is sometimes a hard thing for people to do. They spend too much time being inwardly focused and they aren’t that aware of what is going on in the outside world.
Step 1
The first step is to reverse that pattern. Spend time being externally focused. You have to know the difference between what is inside of your head and what is the external world. That sounds easy but trust me most people do not know the difference.
To practice this, take out an object, say a deck of cards. Focus completely on the deck of cards so completely that you memorize it, and notice how that feels. Then when you’re still looking at the deck of cards, start to talk to yourself inside of your own head and think about that while you look at the deck. Notice how that is different.
Once you know what is inside of your head and what is the external world, you need to remain cognizant of that at all times. Know when you are drifting into dream land and know when you are fully wide awake. How much of your time driving is spent completely focused on the outer road? If you think about it, it’s probably not much.
Step 2
Practice hyperacuity. [tag]Hyperacuity[/tag] means that all of your senses are switched ON. Before I mentioned it, were you completely aware of all of your physical sensations? If you begin to focus on your body right now, how does that differ from what you were feeling before?
And while you’re focusing on the body, how much of the world are you taking in with your eyes? How many of the sounds around you can you track, and can you feel the general vibe of the room you are in.
The goal is to track all of those at once. You want to overwhelm your auditory.
Auditory channels move much slower than visual channels, and there is no way the audio inside of your head will ever keep up with the pictures. My personal belief is that one of the first steps in a change process is to significantly reduce or get rid of the self-talk.
So here is an exercise. Go out to somewhere where there’s a lot of activity, preferrably involving people talking. See how many of the voices you can track simultaneously. Allow your brain to become overwhelmed.
By letting go you will allow yourself to take in the extra data. People who try to remain in control at all times are expending tons of energy to try to control the data flow. Just like it’s hard to put a needle in a vein when somebody is flexing their muscle, everything in the body and mind works better when there is relaxation and acceptance present.
During this exercise keep your vision as wide (x/y axis) and as deep (z axis) as possible. See how many colors you can take in at once. Allow yourself to feel every molecule of air surrounding your skin. Notice the minute muscle movements in your body. Notice your breathing.
Basically take all of your senses as you start to perceive things much more acutely. You may become aware of a pressure.
Step 3
Amp up your [tag]intuition[/tag]. After you’ve practiced Step 2 for a while, and you’ve done it successfully, it’s time to get really easy about it and let things come to you.
This involves not blocking the intuitions. All of you would get intuitions and enlightened thoughts every moment if you weren’t constantly getting in the way of yourselves. So acceptance of the moment and letting go is a must. If you try to control the process, either through muscle tension or inside voices or ego issues, the whole thing goes kaput.
One of the things I do is I train guys on how to walk up to girls and talk to them. At first they are so frightened and pumping so much adrenaline into themselves that they can only take in a very limited amount of extra data. At that stage all of their resources are trapped. After a while though they get better and they are able to receive more data and make better decisions.
You have to give up trying to expect a response. What is the difference between expectation and anticipation? Anticipation feels very light-hearted, like there is a positive outcome there. You assume positivity. Expectation means that you are moving out into the future in order to put an outcome there that hasn’t actually happened yet.
You also have to change your beliefs regarding intuitions. If your reality is that you don’t get them, then you won’t get them. If you are open to the fact that things may turn out to be much better than you expected, then you may find that realizing itself in your life as well.
Most people have caps on just how good they can feel, or how good their life can be. They have caps on how fast it can happen, and they usually assume hard-work must be involved. Well, you could be one of those people, or you could join the more enlightened group that gets all the rewards.
Why are some people much more successful than the vast majority? I believe it’s because they allowed themselves to have it.
As has been recommended before, Eckhart Tolle’s books are good for present-focused [tag]consciousness[/tag]. Shinzen Young also has an excellent [tag]meditation[/tag] product out called “The Science of Enlightenment” - I would say it’s the best way to begin your meditation practices, bar none. And you can be in a state of meditation during hyper-acuity.
When you are doing hypnosis with someone, you must be solid in your role.
I think the reason that leaders like Jim Jones or Oral Roberts are successful is that they are (or were) truly convinced of their mission. They believe something so fully that what they project comes off brilliantly congruent.
[tag]Congruency[/tag] is something you can amp up and down. I created a switch. When you become overwhelmingly congruent, it is like you are blowing the person out with energy. If the [tag]frames[/tag] are right and you have established expectation of god-like experiences (i.e. religious leaders), then that is taken as an affirmation of your [tag]personal power[/tag]. It can be negative however because people are not ready for the wattage you can pump into the universe if you wake up.
I know a lot of hypnotists who aren’t congruent with their own expectations, and, in addition, they are mismatching the other person’s map with the excuse of being “accurate.”
EXAMPLE. If a person tells me “don’t look me in the eyes” they are telling me that they believe I can hypnotize them by looking them in the eyes.
Assuming I have permission to hypnotize them, instead of saying “Actually, honey, I can’t hypnotize you by looking you in the eyes, in fact no hypnotist can do that,” which is a stupid thing to say…
I tell them “It’s ok, you don’t have to look at me with your eyes, because a picture of my eyes looking right into you can can go ahead and POP between the eyelids and your unconscious portion of your mind, they’re inside eyes, and they are telling you the the harder you try to open your normal outside eyes, the more they get locked shut. Only when the inside eyes can see clearly how deeply inside the trance we are going, you can start to be fine with them being locked shut now and just go all the way, deep into this.”
For all you listening, go inside your mind, grab that congruency dial, and right when you tell her that you’re going deep into this trance because you hear my words inside your head at this point in the conversation, you turn that congruency up and you leave it on full.
All of these things are good to have you in hypnosis. For all of those beginners (to go into [tag]trance[/tag]), start to assume you already do know what you’re doing. Pretend so fully that it becomes true for you.
One of the first [tag]inductions[/tag] that most hypnotists should be taught in a [tag]hypnosis[/tag] course today is the [tag]Dave Elman induction[/tag]. Unfortunately, a lot of courses start with a [tag]progressive relaxation[/tag] or other “old timey” induction.
This is my explanation of how to do a modified Dave Elman induction. I think it has improved slightly from the original and easier for most neo learners to grasp. Even though Dave passed away about 40 years ago, this remains one of the best inductions in hypnosis today.
In short, if you don’t know this one, you want to learn this right away. If you do know it, then perhaps my explanation will add a few tidbits or tweaks that you can alter for your own use.
Have fun:
Start
Take a deep breath, hold it for a mental count of three, and let it go with a sigh … As you let that breath go now, close your eyes, and go deeper and deeper into a perfect state of relaxation.
Physical Relaxation
Take that [tag]relaxation[/tag] now and just go deeper …. Sweeping from the top of your head, to the tips of your toes … From the soles of your feet to the palms of your hands, with every breath growing more limp, more loose, more relaxed
Test for Eye Catelepsy, also called “The Eye Lock”
Now I want you to relax all those tiny little muscles in your eyelids, like an old wet dish rag has been placed over them. Relax all those muscles so limp, so loose, so totally relaxed, that you couldn’t possibly open them again without putting tension back into them. When you know that you’ve got them that relaxed, just go ahead and give them a good test. [Look at the eyes … When you see the first signs of eyelid flutter then say:] That’s good, stop testing now, and just let the relaxation grow deeper and deeper.
[Notes: You want to tell them to test the eyes only when they know that they have relaxed them sufficiently until they won’t work. If their eyes open that means they haven’t followed that instruction. Occasionally you’ll get people who say, “well do you want me to open my eyes?” and you have to explain to them that when the eyes get so relaxed, they get so they can’t open, and if they can relax their eyes to that point they will NOT open.
If they continue to fail then that generally means they aren’t following instructions - but keep in mind that as you get more experienced you’ll be able to work with more people and be able to troubleshoot what is going on much more effectively.]
Fractionation
In a second I’m going to ask you to open and close your eyes, and when you close your eyes back down, I want you to go ten times deeper. Now go ahead and open .. and close your eyes… ten times deeper.
In a second I’m going to ask you to open and close your eyes again, this time go twice as relaxed as you are right now … Go ahead and open your eyes.. close your eyes… two times more relaxed. Double the relaxation and then go deeper.
And in a second I’ll ask you to open and close your eyes one last time, this time go into the deepest trance that is possible for you, and open … and close your eyes… deeper .. and deeper relaxed… All the way down into the basement of trance
[Note: When you have them open their eyes, put your hand in front of their eye-lids so they don’t see the lights/distractions around them … lift your hand up a little bit for the open motion, and then guide their eyes down with the closed motion.
[tag]Fractionation[/tag] is based on the principle that when you take a person in and out of [tag]trance[/tag], they tend to go more deeply into trance when you take them back in. Thus when you have them open their eyes, you are breaking their state. Skilled practitioners know how to fractionate very often and very effectively. Don’t underestimate how powerful of a tool this is.]
Test for Physical Relaxation and Deepener
In a second I’m going to lift up your right wrist. Don’t try to help me or hinder me, just let it hang there like limp, loose, dead weight. [Pick up the wrist] And just go ahead and let me have all the weight… [Move the wrist up and down and then side to side — it’s the side to side movement that they don’t anticipate] .. And that’s right… and I’m going to drop this hand, and let the hand drop only at the rate and speed that you’re willing to go … [Drop the hand] All the way down. [That’s a double bind: You already dropped the hand, so it presupposes that they agreed to go all the way down]
[Note: you can repeat this test at random points during the hypnosis if you want to deepen the relaxation, because it is an already accepted mechanism that if you lift and drop their hand, they’ll go deeper.
You have to make sure that they have completely relaxed their hand and arm. I find that it sometimes helps to give a little bit of touch around the shoulder joint because it implies that the hand is disconnected.]
Amnesia for the Numbers
Now we want to let your mind relax as deeply as your body continues to relax now. In a second I’ll give you some numbers, and you will begin counting outloud, slowly backwards starting with the number 100, and with the number 100, I want you to see the number 100, and with every descending number, just let those numbers grow smaller, darker, harder to see [gesture and imagine yourself the numbers being gone], until by the time you reach 96 or even 97, those numbers will just be gone … gone from your mind, gone from your thoughts, and you relax even deeper. Begin counting outloud, slowly, backwards from 100 on down now. [When they pause for more than a second or so, say:] All gone? [Wait for a response] That’s right, now just go deeper and let that relaxation go all the way thru your body.
[Notes: (1) An option here is to have the person say the words “deeper relaxed” in between the numbers. For clients who might take a longer time to get the effect, this will speed up the process because they are saying “deeper relaxed” out of their own mouth.”
(2) Make sure they understand that they will count outloud, slowly, and backwards.
(3) When you tell them that by the time they reach “96 or even 97″ you are telling them that the numbers will be gone quickly, and you are testing for [tag]somnambulism[/tag]. If you say a lower number even though it seems like you are making it more likely that they’ll get the effect, in fact they will simply take longer and the convincer aspect of it won’t be there as much.
(4) If they continue to count, you can intersperse the numbers with suggestions like: “Just make them gone now .. I can’t do it for you .. If you want it, it will happen instantly” … If they still continue to not forget the numbers (that is fail at the test) then transition to something else, as if they’ve done perfectly. Some people will take longer than others though.
(5) At the end, say “All gone?” or “Are they gone?” … Don’t say “Can you see the numbers?” because that is a direct suggestion for them to see the numbers]
- End of the induction -
Where to go from here
If your intent is simply to show the person what it feels like to be hypnotized, just give them a couple more feel good suggestions, and then emerge them. To emerge them say something along the lines of:
“In a second I’ll count from one to three, when I reach the number three you’ll emerge out of trance, feeling rested, relaxed, feeling good and full of energy… And one, all suggestions and commands are integrated deeply… two .. as you open your eyes you acknowledge and admit this has been very very relaxing and fun, and three… eyes open, wide awake, feeling fine and in perfect health, better than before”
Otherwise you can bridge into pretty much any other hypnotic thing that you want to do. At this point is where I would create instant induction triggers, the circle of excellence exercise, etc.
Notes on how to enhance this induction using automatic deepeners:
One thing most professionals will do is to build automatic processes based on utilization. What this means is that they utilize things in the environment that are going to happen anyway and they use it as a way to automatically deepen the trance effect. So, in most inductions a professional will say something along the lines of:
“Outside sounds, outside influences cannot disturb or distract you, they’re only the sounds of the environment, and in fact that can only cause you to go deeper.”
“With every breath you take, with every word I say, you can just go deeper, and deeper relaxed.”
“Becoming now more attuned to the sound of my voice.. the sound of my voice taking you all the way inside.”
You are going to keep talking, the person is going to keep breathing, they are going to hear things … So instead of being afraid of somebody yelling in the background, why not train your people to the effect that if they did hear that yell, it would just make them grow more relaxed and follow the suggestions even more, even to the point where the louder that yell got, would be the deeper quality of relaxation they would experience? It’s not going to happen that they tense up again because the yell gets softer, so you might as well build it in.
Other things to link automatic deepeners to include any sensation the person experiences, the weight of their body on the chair, the feeling of the clothes on their body, the blood moving thruout their body, the air moving thruout their lungs, air touching their skin, cars moving by in the background, or anything else that they see, hear, feel, or experience.
When do you use the automatic deepeners? Sometimes right after the eye lock you want to give the suggestion that noises in the environment will only cause you to go deeper, otherwise do it when they are in a good starting level of trance like at the fractionation step, and repeat it when you know they’re in really deeply.
I’ve recently started meditating, and indeed it’s a very relaxing process. Once I’ve started talking about it, some people have wondered why I might do both meditation and self-hypnosis, or what the difference is between meditating and being hypnotized. What is the difference between a guided meditation and hypnosis?
The primary characteristic of hypnosis is that your experience and especially your auditory channels are being directed externally. You are taking input from an “other” that is outside of you, and the entire universe gets narrowed down to the sound of their voice and the things they are having you experience.
Meditation on the other hand is very internally directed. Some people meditate on specific ideas in which case the process is to concentrate on the idea so fully that the other-than-conscious can come up with an answer, and that answer will just pop into the mind. This process is very similar to self-hypnosis.
Other people meditate with the purpose of becoming “blank” and peaceful. Clearly this is very different from hypnosis where the objective isn’t to become blank but to actually have things occur - and what you’re aiming for is more to become *receptive*. Perhaps meditation also involves becoming receptive to the energies around you and accepting them and allowing them to pass freely.
For my purposes, I consider a guided meditation to be the same thing as hypnosis. It simply has a different connotation and people go into it with a different framework. But just because we call it a different name doesn’t mean that it’s not hypnosis.
I have personally been to several new-age meditation sessions where the intent certainly seemed to be to get you into a drowsy trance state before beginning anything - and yet the people certainly seemed to be unaware they were doing hypnosis.
My definition of hypnosis is establishing selective focus and suspending critical thought. I would add onto there that it is “other-directed.” If you change it to internally directed, it becomes meditation. When we meditate we go into a trance state with a certain set of filters and guidelines - frameworks in which we can interpret the experience. We have selective focus and suspension of critical thought. The only thing next is to put in an external guide and you would have full-blown hypnosis.
Pacing is something that we often do naturally in which we reflect back characteristics of a person’s behavior or internal map in order to build rapport. With pacing you are reinforcing where the person is already and thus creating a connection.
One of the most basic ways to pace is to mirror someone’s body language.
Another way to pace is to use words in the same representational system that the person is speaking from. You can remember rep systems by the acronym VAKOG - Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory.
These are the five senses, and they are called representational systems because they are representations of reality that go on inside of your head. Usually we only talk about the first three (VAK) because the O/G distinctions kind of fit under kinesthetic.
So if someone is using primarily visual words like “I see what you mean” or “Let me paint a clear picture for you” or “That guy is really bright,” you want to talk to them in those words. Likewise, someone could be using auditory or kinesthetic words.
Here is an example of something you don’t want to do - lets pretend that Fred is trying to sell Jill something:
Jill: Alarm bells are ringing in my head, Fred. I hear my upper managers and they’re telling me that we don’t have any money. And I don’t think we have it either but when I listen to you somehow I think it’s different. I want us to have a harmonious business relationship.
Fred: Jill, when you see the results you won’t believe it. Just visualize in your head and focus on all the positive outcomes. Once you’ve committed to our training, you’ll look over at your managers and they will be smiling at you and you’ll know really clearly that you’ve done a good job.
OK, now what happened? Jill is totally auditory, using words like [alarm bells, ringing, I hear, they’re telling me, listen, harmonious] and Fred completely mismatches her by using all visual, words like [see, visualize, focus, look, smiling, clearly].
My bet is that Jill doesn’t see the smiling faces, instead she’s got the nagging voice of her supervisor and “alarm bells” telling her that she’d better save the company’s money.
You get the idea. To do this you have to listen to what they are saying and what types of words they use. Then echo back to them using the same representational system (modality) that they used, and they will hear you much clearly, they’ll see that you know what you’re doing, and they’ll feel that you truly understand them.
Keep this in mind, and the next time you’re talking to someone, you have something to practice.
I’m often asked if I use Milton Erickson’s famous Handshake Induction.
It is said that psychologists wouldn’t shake Milton’s hand because they were afraid they’d go into trance.
I’ve also heard that they used to teach courses to these psychologists about how to do hypnosis without going into trance yourself. Pretty funny, actually. I’m in hypnosis just about every time I hypnotize someone.
Anyway Erickson’s handshake induction goes like this:
Go to shake the person’s hand
As you near their hand, pull your hand away
At the same time, use your left hand to pick up that person’s wrist and bring their hand up to their face.
Say, “look at your hand.”
This is a pattern interrupt.
A person is so used to just going ahead and to shake someone’s hand that when the hypnotist does something different, it interrupts the flow of their brain for a second and their internal auditory quiets down.
After those steps you can say something along the lines of, “Notice the lines and the colors of your hand, and the shades and sensations as your head can just stay there on it’s own and move closer to your hand.”
Brian David Phillips has a post on this with video examples (from a hypnotic video challenge) that I think is great. Check it out here.
Phonological ambiguities are produced when a set of sounds can be said in more than one way. One word might be made to sound like another word. This may be because the words sound so similar, or it may be because of the way we mark out the word when we say it.
If I tell you to move “into” new patterns of thought, I could easily be saying to move in TWO new patterns, one which leads to your future, and one which leads to the past.
Of course a great ambiguity from Milton Erickson is “Your unconscious.” Your conscious mind is carefully monitoring what I’m saying, BUT you know that your unconscious now is able to sort through the sound of my voice and find which sound feels most soothing.
Am I talking about a part of your mind, your unconscious mind; or is that a command? You’re unconscious. NOW.
Can you hear the voices here?
Have you ever been able to pay a tension or does this particular activity just make your muscles bunch up?
How quickly will you find yourself begin to relax inside and ONE TWO (want to) THREE (free) your mine (mind) from the old pictures of your past? It’s so that you can lead TWO go inside quicker because you’re the ONE who can do that. (This is an example of using ambiguities to covertly fractionate)
Studies have shown that human beings can hold seven “bits” of information, plus or minus two. So if you’re really talented you can hold nine, and if you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed you can probably at least hold five.
So, what is a “bit” of information? I’m not going to try to define that scientifically, although I’m sure it’s been done before. However I will suggest that a bit could be a thought, an idea you’re trying to hold onto (whether that’s consciously driven or unconsciously), or just paying attention to the space between your toes.
I was reading anarticle at PsyBlog about this characteristic of short term memory, and it noted something very interesting: That a six-month old infant can only hold ONE bit of information at any given time.
Is this an advantage or a disadvantage? If your world only consists of one thing, that might mean you can’t get too complex with your thoughts. But then, complexity leads to confusion and thinking you know things. An infant doesn’t think they know anything, and as a result they are like silly putty, which as you know will absorb the ink from any section of the newspaper that you want to press it down upon.
I was out with some friends, and the night was winding down - it was already about 1am. I had already hypnotized this girl’s friend (seen below) with an arm-drop induction, and had conditioned her to a trigger of “sleep now” and snapping my fingers.
After some small talk, I asked her if she believed the trigger still worked. She shook her head, because “obviously” she couldn’t be in hypnosis after almost twenty minutes.
“Give your friend your cigarette,” I told her. And just as soon as she did, I said the magic words and she went into trance like a rocket.
At that point, just for fun, the girl above still hadn’t been hypnotized. So I had them exchange items again, and this time I did an instant induction without any conditioning what-so-ever which is what you see in the first image.
Most hypnotists actually precondition the people they work with before they do “instant” inductions with them - however I’ve proven that you can hypnotize people instantly. You’d be surprised at how many hypnotists are afraid of instant inductions.
Just for fun I stuck the girl’s feet to the floor using some hypnosis glue. I started to walk away saying, “We had a great time girls, talk to you later!” And she yelled after us, “HEY! I can’t move my feet!”
Once she was absolutely convinced that she was in fact hypnotized, I gave her some suggestions about how when she was ready and when it made the most sense to each and every part of her (ecology and future pacing), her subconscious mind could automatically eliminate the need for those cigarettes altogether.
I’ve done my good deed for the day. Time to go harass the locals.
Another guy who doesn’t refer to himself as a hypnotist but certainly uses a ton of it in his work is Jerry Stocking.
For people who aren’t keen on a “newage” slant, I’d suggest you give it a miss. However if you want to make the most out of your life and you’re open to some new ideas, I think it’s incredibly worth your time to go and get his Illusion Conclusion course - and then, when you like that, go attend his events.
If you get the course, check out the first bowling metaphor he uses. It’s excellent.
In short, I give a 10/10 recommendation to Jerry Stocking. He was trained by Dave Dobson (below), he’s a Master Practitioner in NLP, and so on. If you’re really interested in your personal development (or if you consider yourself a good enough hypnotist/nlper to deconstruct what he’s doing), you need to get his course.
“Jerry who? Yeah, I thought so. This one is limited for those of you who are ready for some PhD level stuff to start working on. Jerry is one of those true masters, a genius who looks and sounds unassuming and sometimes even awkward. Don’t be fooled.
If my friend Brian Vincent hadn’t recommended Jerry, I would have turned off the CD after 5 minutes. Jerry taught me how we all run ‘patterns’ that define our consciousness, and how those patterns can interfere with and distort our abilities to live our lives the way we want to. He gets pretty deep into understanding auditory, visual, and kinesthetic energy.
His stuff isn’t for the average bear, but if you want to try some stuff that will kick your butt and change the way you see things forever, order up one of his Illusion Conclusion sets and hold on. I highly recommend it for those of you who are ready for it.”
Dave Dobson says that he has no idea what hypnosis is, but that he can do it really well.
For those who knom him, this is a no-brainer. Dobson is one of the most respected people in the field.
He’s the creator of Other Than Conscious Communication (OTCC) and No-Fault Psychology. The “workshops” he holds, have been renamed into “fun-shops” because he believes they should be fun and not work.
If you have a serious interest in hypnosis or “other than conscious communication” as Dobson calls it, you owe it to yourself to check him out. I get nothing for referring him, he’s just a great guy.
People have been asking me how they can get started with self-hypnosis.
Here is an easy way that will lead you right to where you want to go.
First, decide what suggestion you’d like to give yourself. Good suggestions are stated in the positive. Say “I’m going to weigh 150 pounds” instead of “I don’t want to overeat anymore”.
Second, get an index card. When you’ve got your index card ready, write down your suggestion on the index card.
Now, sit down in a chair, and read the suggestion out loud in such a way that it goes right into your subconscious mind. Then, right as you go into trance, let your body become limp and relaxed, let the card drop and forget about it, and have that suggestion etched in your mind.
Later on we’ll be covering on how a person can know absolutely that they are in trance. Hint: you can still hear what’s going on outside of you, but you just don’t care. It’s ort of like you’re immersed in a good movie or a good book.
I’m listening to a song called “Liquid Sovereignty” by Eyedea and Abilities. I suggest that you listen to it and understand the message.
The chorus is:
“Everyone wants to get out of the rain
Wants to be free, wants to see no more pain
We’re guaranteed that the seasons will change
‘Till then, I’m keeping sunshine on my brain”
… It’s almost metaphorical.
Our space in time here — our lives are made up of polarities. The polarity between thesuccessful, motivated, grounded, and energized individual who drives life to the edge, and the person who never seems to get anything done despite a backdrop of tremendous opportunity.
These are the polarities between confidence and self-loathing; betweenacceptance and denial… and the sharp contrast between striving to be successful at everything, and automatically being successful at nothing, through stagnation and apathetic thought.
Where do -you- want to go?
And as you carry that around with you,
I wonder how quickly you could find yourself able to
Really decide RIGHT NOW whether you want to be average or extraordinary.
It is this type of decision that will shape your unconscious into the person that you are destined to be, so that you get all of the results and the rewards, and the intensity of life that you’ve been waiting for starts immediately.
I am painting you a clear picture so that you know that if you’re “sort of on the line kind of not really there,” you’re not gonna get it.Be pro-active and have your life turn out the way you want it to!
I know that some of you have clocks on the wall, things that tell time. Some of these clocks have these little second hands and if you’re like most people, YOU CAN IMAGINE NOW that with every tick of that clock,
that’s another second in which you’ve spent time contemplating what to do instead of taking massive action. Before you know it, that’ll be YET ANOTHER minute that you have probably spent wishing and hoping and wanting but not -getting- …
What do you truly want?
Lots of motivated people have had this feeling that ANY day now there will suddenly be a big explosion of creativity and genius and insight… And it’s true that eventually you will have that time where you decide to be bigger, better, greater…
But how many seconds or minutes, days or… YEARS will pass by before you realize that it’s time NOW?
Keep that clock in mind and do what it takes. You’ve but one life to give … to yourself, and to everyone who will be benefited from enjoying this new and improved you.
This was filmed on the streets of DC, when we were just walking around hypnotizing people. These girls were receptive and lots of fun to be around, and so they wanted to explore the power of their minds.
We actually cut off the end of this video clip because it got into some stuff that I wasn’t sure I should put on YouTube. I might include it in a bonus with one of my products sometime.
I’d like to have a video of me doing hypnosis and then have the camera pause and I’d come on in a voice-over and explain what just happened.
How about this: you get someone to make a picture, and then you “grab” that picture, and change it to a color in your hand, and then as you bring the color closer, you turn it into a squirt gun and start squirting them with it!
Can you imagine yourself using this technique? I literally did this with a person who is very visually-oriented today (we were working with pleasure states) and it was so funny - everytime I fired the squirt gun they had a very visible response. Then I turned it into a phaser like in star trek and just held down the button!
Of course, at the end I gave them the power in such a way that they can fire it off themselves and feel good now for no reason at all. I did that by using an imagined sliding anchor, like a DHE-style control panel.
I’ve also done things where I’ve told the client to imagine they were in Willy Wonka’s elevator and, if you know anything about Willy Wonka’s elevator, it always bursts thru the ceiling, which is my anticipated effect!
So, how do we elicit states?
1. Direct commands. “Now in a second I want you to feel a really good feeling, all thruout your mind and body”
2. Description. “Have you ever felt that first tingle of pleasure starting at your feet and then moving upward at the perfect speed, right under your skin but at the same time barely touching it?”
3. Description/questions coupled with physiology . “How would you be breathing if you were really certain right now? What would your posture be like? Would your head be up or down? What kinds of thoughts would you be thinking?”
“You know the other day I saw a really successful guy, and he told me that people can choose to have their facial muscles relax but at the same time grin a little bit, he said that there’s a process where you can really start to feel yourself standing more upright, and where what happens when you start to think about being successful and you start to describe how that will feel, your body starts to make these changes happen instantly…”
4. Pacing and leading. (and feel it yourself.) “Wow it sounds like your life really isn’t doing that well right now, but have you noticed how you’re already starting to move past that? And as you pick up speed towards what you do want to have happen and you start to think about that, you know I even see that your eyes are clearer now… You know, I have to wonder, if you could just pretend to go into a totally neutral state right now, one where you are thinking clearly and your breathing becomes deeper, what does that feel like?” (etc, move into the other languaging)
You elicit the state, lead them where you know they want to go, and then once you’re done, give them back their own power so they can return there every time. They’ll remember you forever.
When you think about where you want to be in twenty years, are the images full of detail? Can you hear the sounds and feel the feelings?
If those images lack clarity, you’re not the only one. Most people have put very little thought and energy into how their lives will come together in the future. Can you imagine going through your life with no clear direction, with no set feelings about what you’ll be doing the next year? That is what most people will do. Do you want to be “most people”? No? Recently my hypnosis cohort and I led fourteen people through a series of imaginative exercises that culminated in one lucky person being guided into a super-dreamy trance state. It’s a state where you are free to imagine anything that your subconscious mind computer can come up with.
When we had this person in trance, we guided him into future-pacing how he was going to use these skills twenty years out into the future. In this highly unconscious process, he was able to incorporate desires that he wasn’t consciously aware of, and he came out of trance with a more useful map of where he needs to go.
When Freud was experimenting with hypnosis, he used a technique known as “free-association” that he believed tapped into the power of the unconscious mind, and this exercise that I’m going to share with you has a lot in common with what he did, without all the crazy stuff.
What we’re going to do is make a dreams list.
It’s not a list of what is possible. It’s not a list about what is likely. It’s not a list with any limitations.
It’s a list of dreams. It’s asking questions like: what would you do if you knew that you could not fail? If money and time were no object and you could go anywhere and do anything, who would you choose to be? Let your mind be free to come up with your unconscious desires.
Here is what you’ll do. Grab a rudimentary writing tool like a pencil or a pen, and have in front of you one or two fully blank sheets of paper. Turn your cell phone, your wife, your kids, and your computer screen off. No distractions. Go find that “Do Not Disturb” sign you stole from the Marriott.
You’ll need a timer: Digital, Analog, or Sand. Set it for three minutes.
When the timer starts to go, I want you to write down as fast as you can and without any conscious thought everything you want to achieve in your life. You can even put down things that you already have, but the concentration should be on what you want. Give yourself permission to be as focused on material possessions as your subconscious chooses to be. Put down those intangibles too.
Now I want you to … right now… before another second passes, grab that pencil, those blank sheets of paper, set your timer, and … wait for it … If you had unlimited time, unlimited talent, and unlimited resources, what would you choose to do? Who would you choose to be? Are you ready? Set?
- GO! -
Hey! What are you still doing here? You have all the instructions! Grab your pencil and paper, turn on your imagination, and get to it!
